I Asked Interior Experts About My Small Balcony—Their Tips Are Game-Changing (2024)

I have a small balcony that is 4.5’ x 7’ off my primary bedroom, and for the longest time, I just couldn’t figure out what to do with it. The size was one issue, but the two pillars right in the middle of the space made it even more challenging to arrange furniture and make full use of the square footage.

Determined to tackle this space, I reached out to interior designers for their ideas on decorating balconies.

Here’s a photo of my small balcony. It appears wider than it actually is because of the wide-angle lens. The double doors open outward onto the balcony, further complicating furniture placement. While this space definitely needs renovation, it would be more practical to tackle it alongside my primary bedroom, which I don’t currently have the budget to reno. So, in the meantime, furniture and furnishings are my best bet.

Let’s hear what the pros say about using affordable IKEA furniture to decorate a balcony.

Ricky Allen, Interior Designer at Ever Wallpaper, first considers the climate and exposure to sunlight. “Opt for weather-resistant furniture and accessories. It’s also important to create shade with items like the TVETÖ umbrella or SEGLARÖ to keep things cool during summer.”

Given the intense evening sun that floods my balcony, adding shade is essential in making the space usable. A movable umbrella could be a practical solution until I install a more permanent option like a shade sail.

“This summer, I see a trend toward incorporating natural elements and sustainability. Think lush greenery with hanging planters and upcycled or multi-functional furniture that maximizes small spaces while maintaining an eco-friendly focus,” adds Ricky.

The pillars can be transformed into intentional design elements. Install small shelves or hooks on the pillars for art, plants, and storage. “Personal touches like art, textiles, and greenery can significantly impact the room’s overall feel, making it uniquely yours. Create a space that tells your story and evolves with you over time.”

Florida-based Interior Designer, Famelly Del Orbe, shares her top three recommendations for creating a modern-luxury and cozy space. She suggests starting with the UTLÄNGAN decking floor, which she believes will elevate any space instantly, making it feel luxurious, modern, and cozy. “The long plank design helps make small spaces appear larger,” she explains. “If you want to achieve a warm, natural look, opt for the brown option; for a more intriguing, moody aesthetic, choose black. Either way, it will look amazing.”

I couldn’t agree more. The tiles on my balcony are worn and have seen better days. Installing new decking would instantly add warmth and renew the space. This single move will probably make the biggest impact on the space.

The HAVSTEN is also one of my faves, and I may just be able to squeeze in the armchair, angled between the pillars. I love that it is water repellent because who has time to move furniture indoors when it rains? Also, the fact that the cushion cover is removable and washable makes it a winning piece of outdoor furniture.

While I love the idea of the KROKHOLMEN paired with the HAVSTEN, it may just be a tad too big for my balcony. I’m leaning towards a table that hangs off the balcony like the TORPARÖ. It’s not the classiest thing, but it is large enough to lay down an ice-cold aperitif or a book. And what a space saver it is! Hacking a balcony bar is also a good idea if I ever get to it.

To complete the space, Famelly suggests adding plants and accessories to capture that perfect summer ambiance. “When selecting plants, ensure they thrive in the sunlight the space receives. Don’t underestimate the significance of ambient lighting; it can transform the area, making it cozy and inviting, enabling you to enjoy your patio or balcony well into the night.”

Another designer I consulted, Adrian Pedraza, also emphasized the importance of lighting. He recommends adding SOLVINDEN solar-powered lanterns to enhance the ambiance.

My space currently has only a single overhead light, so lanterns will definitely be on my to-buy list.
