Women don't celebrate themselves enough. I'm about to go off script and share something that is making me incredibly proud today 🙌 This article demonstrates one of the biggest milestones of my professional career (so far). I was appointed as CEO/Chair of the California Restaurant Mutual Benefit Corp (CRMBC) in December 2022. Between then and now, I built a team and board around me that was able to take this #workcomp self-insured group from a decade long flat line status quo to a REMARKABLE 71.8% INCREASE IN SIX MONTHS!! The only part I'm taking credit for is bringing these amazing people together and holding the vision. This happened because of the gargantuan lift by our board of trustees, our Administrator, our Marketing team, our loss prevention team, and our underwriting team. But mostly this is happening because these savvy restaurant operators are understanding how much of an impact self-insuring work comp can have on their bottom line. The most exciting part of this is that this is just the mid-year renewals. Well said Jon Wroten, MBA, CPP !Self-insured groups (SIG) like California Restaurant Mutual Benefit Corp (CRMBC) make it possible for smaller and midsize restaurant owners to get the benefits of self-insuring their Worker’s Compensation.We are finding that some brokers who don’t understand SIGs tell their clients that it’s too risky to self-insure. What’s risky is handing your money over to a traditional carrier who doesn’t care about your company’s profitability or your loss prevention. The worst you perform with a traditional carrier, the more money they are going to make when they raise your rates to satisfy their #1 priority which is profits to their shareholders. SIGs are nonprofit and governed by its members. We lower rates, control costs, and let members have a say in their claims handling. As soon as this clicks in for the employer, it’s an easy decision.

This articles points out an interesting phenomenon that is going to impact every employer's work comp rates in the future. Last year, the number of claims went down but the cost of claims increased. Think about that for a minute. In our previous podcast, Mark Walls and I had an in depth conversation about why that is happening. It is not because the injuries are changing, it is because of advances in medical technology and expanded life span expectancy. This is a great thing for human quality of life, but there is a very real impact to the costs of insurance. It is things like this that make self-insuring a far better way to manage costs than buying insurance through the traditional marketing.
